- 1. Please introduce yourself.
- Hi! I’m dustedpink, but you can also call me Flora. I’m a twenty-something design graduate who loves art, design, and programming. I’ve called Neocities my home since 2023!
- 2. How long have you been making websites?
- I’ve been working on websites in some fashion since 2015 - experimenting with website builders as a young teen. I finally started web development traditionally in 2020 in a web design class at school.
- 3. And what got you into the hobby?
- I think I’ve always been fascinated by websites. There’s something novel and exciting about digital spaces that grow and change over time, and can be accessed from anywhere in the world.
- 4. What kind of website are you most interested in?
- Personal sites for sure! I love browsing Neocities and Nekoweb and seeing all the fun stuff people have come up with. I love being able to share in other people’s joys and passions so it’s always so lovely to see.
- 5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?
- I’d love to lie and say that dustedpink is meticulously planned and organised but I kind of just wing it and refer to w3schools and other users’ sites to make sure I’m not messing it up.
- 6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.
- In terms of art and also being a human being in general, Chisai has always been a major inspiration for me! I love their art and I look up to them like an older sibling. In terms of Neocities, I’ve been inspired by pretty much everyone I’ve seen. Look at the links on my links page to see a bunch of sites which have given me inspiration.
- 7. What's your favourite part about making websites?
- Getting to see my ideas come to life! It’s so fun building a layout and watching all the little pieces fall into place.
- 8. And the thing you struggle with the most?
- Organising my stylesheet. That bad boy is a weapons grade mess.
- 9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?
- I use a mix! The blog is mostly the same layout but I like to mix things up between pages. The iframes went super badly with dustedpink 1.0 so I think this is for the better.
- 10. How confident are you with CSS?
- Very!
- 11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?
- Is this a trick question?
- 12. What is your favourite HTML element?
- IDK if sites even work without <html> so… that?
- 13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?
- Copy and paste all the header crap and make a million <div>s
- 14. Do you know JavaScript?
- Barely.
- 15. How about PHP?
- I did a little PHP like… five years ago? So I’m not the best at it I imagine.
- 16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?
- PINK.
- 17. Are you more focused on content or design?
- Design! It’s how my brain works. Content is just blah blah blah you use to fill the empty space!
- 18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?
- I would love to, but I fear a domain service will hold my url hostage if I forget to pay.
- 19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?
- Super cool! You do you!
- 20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?
- I hope so. I do check but I fear I’m always missing something.
- 21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?
- I love them so much! Especially when they’re super cute and well designed!
- 22. What do you think of button walls in particular?
- Button walls are rad. I think the one on my homepage would be way bigger if I didn’t have restraint.
- 23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?
- Gosh, I don’t know. This is already version 3! I spent a whole year working on a layout I scrapped. I imagine I’d start from scratch and focus even more on device compatibility next time.
- 24. Are you envious of other people's websites?
- Always! But in a good way. I think part of loving stuff is feeling a comfortable amount of envy. Everyone on here makes so much cool shit!
- 25. What text editor do you use?
- the… neocities… code editor… I’m so sorry.
- 26. Why do you use that one?
- lazy
- 27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?
- I’m always paranoid services like catbox and imgur might go down so I prefer to just host them myself where possible.
- 28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?
- I don’t know why it has to be a debate. They’re both awesome services and I’d happily host dustedpink on either.
- 29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?
- Probably 50-100mb?
- 30. Do you keep local backups of your files?
- Not as many as I should.
- 31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?
- I prefer the cool visual flair but I also do like a site which is easy to read.
- 32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?
- Pink obviously, and yeah I just love the colour so much.
- 33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?
- Only ever for mental health reasons! I’ve had people write some nasty stuff in my guestbook before and that took me out of updating for a time.
- 34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?
- I had lots of friendly faces giving me feedback and advice a year ago! I haven’t spoken to any of them since, so I guess it’s a solitary hobby for now.
- 35. Do people in your real life know about your website?
- Yeah! And they’re all so supportive. They keep me going when I find it hard to motivate myself to work on dustedpink.
- 36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?
- Since I’m only now coming back to Neocities, it’ll be hard to say. I’d like to update as often as I can though!
- 37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?
- I’ve only made three versions of the site and this is the second to be publicly released. I personally try to avoid redesigning it too often, as it takes lots of time.
- 38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?
- I feel like it’s pretty me-focused, I don’t have much else to talk about otherwise.
- 39. Do you do web design professionally?
- Nope! Did a fair bit at university though.
- 40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?
- I’m not sure if that’s my jam. Modern web dev requires a lot of work that extends far beyond the scope of a silly little static site like this.
- 41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?
- Not often, but you’re always welcome to get in touch with me!
- 42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?
- Only a small amount. Besides Discord and Tumblr, I’m not using social media too much.
- 43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?
- Discord 100% of the time.
- 44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?
- Mostly VGM, The Beatles, and whatever loud trans music I have in a playlist. I dunno why it’s those three, it just helps me code I guess.
- 45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?
- Unless I start a clique or webring, I’ll only ever need the one!
- 46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?
- I don’t think dustedpink has an established topic or theme. It’s kind of just whatever I want it to be that day!
- 47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?
- I’m a little of both. I’m definitely a lot more outgoing here than I am in real life but I’m mostly the same person as who I present on my site.
- 48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?
- Not yet!
- 49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?
- They’re super cool languages! A lot of the shortcomings I’ve run into were a personal lack of knowledge and not a true limitation of the language.
- 50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?
- Excessive style tag use! I’ve looked at some sites on here before which use the same format over and over using style tags when they could easily just define a class. It’ll save you so much effort in the long run and your website will be much easier to code!
- 51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?
- It’s common on the indie web for the site to be developed with the viewport of the webmaster in mind and not other devices and formats. I have a 1440p monitor and lots of site layouts break because of it. It’s also nice to support mobile users where you can!
- 52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?
- I try my best but sometimes I do fall into non-semantic habits.
- 53. Do you consider different browsers?
- Unfortunately, no. Chromium dominates so much of the modern landscape that I kind of just pray things will work for Safari and Firefox users. (feel free to report issues though)
- 54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.
- Chrome, and I won’t convince anyone to use it. I just use it knowing that 90% of my visitors will be seeing my page on a Chromium browser.
- 55. And what OS are you on?
- Windows and MacOS
- 56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?
- They’re both good operating systems for general use.
- 57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?
- dustedpink is now mobile friendly! huzzah!
- 58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?
- Evil. Especially when it’s super loud. I’ve been jumpscared by Neocities sites so many times.
- 59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?
- Webrings are awesome! I’m hoping to join more this year and be more active in the community.
- 60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?
- Not yet, but I love it when shrine pages are super customised to reflect what they’re worshipping.
- 61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?
- Depends on what you mean by cliche haha.
- 62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?
- A place where someone feels cozy and happy. That’s what I want dustedpink to be for all of my visitors!
- 63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?
- I’m a graphic designer and a digital artist! I draw and design most of the assets you can find on dustedpink, though, it’ll usually be listed somewhere if the artwork is by someone else (if it’s not me it’s probably Chisai).
- 64. What are your favourite resource sites?
- Refer to my links page!
- 65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?
- Saving excessively in the neocities code editor when making even minor formatting changes.
- 66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?
- Go. Have. Fun!
- 67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?
- Almost everything I do is in the stylesheet. I’ve only used style tags rarely and where absolutely necessary for a layout to work.
- 68. What do you think of frameset layouts?
- Like iframes? I had to get away from it, people kept complaining about being unable to middle click!
- 69. How about table-based layouts?
- A little retro but if it gets the job done, who cares.
- 70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?
- I think two columns is the sweet spot for me and it’s what I use on dustedpink’s main page. Focusing your design around columns makes mobile and screen reader friendliness super easy to implement!
- 71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?
- CSS. 100%.
- 72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.
- I guess for basic stuff at uni but I don’t see why you wouldn’t just use a stylesheet.
- 73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?
- I try to make sure I have content for pages when I can but I suuuuck at writing stuff up for my site.
- 74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?
- I feel like I’m intermediate but working my way towards advanced. For this iteration of the site I’ve used much better coding practices and I’m using lots of CSS techniques I’ve never tried ‘til now.
- 75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?
- All the time! Chances are that if I’ve seen your website I’ve peeped your code. Sorry!
- 76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?
- W3Schools is the best! I learned a lot from different teachers over the years, and lots of wonderful and helpful people on Neocities have shared resources which I’ve used too. A big part of how I learn is seeing something cool on someone’s site and picking apart how it works to understand it better.
- 77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?
- Never. Everything can be accomplished by doing things properly so there’s no reason to upset browsers by doing wacky coding stuff.
- 78. Thoughts on floating elements?
- If we’re talking about the float property in CSS, then it’s super cool! It’s a great way to position stuff properly in more complex layouts. If we’re talking about using position: absolute to place things floating in the viewport, then I’m not a massive fan of that as it causes so many issues on different devices.
- 79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?
- I prefer em and % as they’re good for dynamic layouts and scaling!
- 80. Do you have a favourite font?
- Jua my beloved.
- 81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?
- I don’t know and I think it’d be a nightmare honestly. I guess you could use a github repo? But you’d need to keep your code super clean and write TONS of comments.
- 82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?
- All the time!
- 83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?
- I don’t bookmark very often, but when I do it’s usually because I love the site so much. If people are bookmarking dustedpink for the same reason I’m very flattered!
- 84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?
- I don’t really need people to be impressed, I just hope people like being here!
- 85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?
- I love video games! I’ve got a big collection of consoles and handhelds - and my tamagotchi collection makes me very popular with all of the ladies, gents, and enbies. (lie)
- 86. How often and for how long are you online?
- I think I’m as much online as I am offline? Take that as good or bad depending on your view of things.
- 87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?
- Mostly an older audience. 18+ is preferred as I’m an adult and I’m only thinking about adults when I publish stuff to my site.
- 88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?
- Uhh, no. I’m not even sure if I fully understand what it is.
- 89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?
- Outside of a little Javascript, I’ve only ever really messed around with Python, and not much.
- 90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?
- I’ve never used a generator and don’t have much of an opinion on them, but I have used some quick layout starters to help me get going on the creative side before!
- 91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?
- I do! Because they’re fun.
- 92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?
- I used to lurk on the TamaTalk forums years ago, but I can’t say I’ve done much forum stuff since.
- 93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?
- I prepare written content text such as this in a Google Docs document.
- 94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?
- Definitely not. Dawg, look at my website. And yeah, I’ve had people say I’m cool before but idk how true that is.
- 95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?
- Yeah, of course! It’s hard being on the internet so long. I’m glad it’s gone.
- 96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?
- If I ever needed to, I would just turn the site into an archive with a disclaimer that the site is dead. I would inform webring owners that I was departing too.
- 97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?
- I think I reveal a moderate amount. I try to be honest while not offering every tiny detail about my life.
- 98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?
- I don’t wanna pick a best because I don’t want people thinking I value anyone over anyone else. But if you’re one of my friends reading this, I love you so much and I appreciate everything you’ve done for me.
- 99. And do you optimise the images on your website?
- I try!
- 100. We're out of time! How do you feel after answering 100 questions? ....other than exhausted.
- I just hope people like my responses! Thanks for reading!
